Monday Maintenance Tip: Lighten up your key chain

Lighten up your key chain

Does your car key share a chain with a dozen or more other keys? That’s a pretty heavy load hanging off the car key when it’s in the ignition. The weight, combined with bouncing while you drive, can wear out the tumblers inside the ignition and eventually lead to ignition switch failure. To add years of service to your ignition switch, purchase a lightweight key chain that allows you to separate your ignition key from the others. Drive with only the ignition key in your ignition. If your ignition key “sticks” when you try to turn on the car, it’s a warning that your ignition switch is about to fail. Replace it before you get stranded.

2013 Kia Cadenza gets a facelift!

Kia_cadenza_ex_v6_2011
In 2009, Kia launched the Cadenza or K7 in South Korea, a full-sized sedan built on the new front-wheel drive Type-N platform shared with the Hyundai Grandeur / Azera.

Despite being mainly a Korea car, it was designed by Peter Schreyer who came from Audi and incorporated the Tiger Nose grille. Yes, it was quite good looking.

Today, photos of a new-for-2013 K7 have emerged from an official presentation in the domestic market. Obviously, the changes have left the car with a whole new front end look, similar to all the new cars Kia has launched recently, like the K3 / Forte, Ceed and K9 / Quoris.

Theres a completely new, more muscular bumper, and the headlights are much more imposing. There are some changes down the side of the K7 as well, new mirrors, added air vents that remind you of a Maserati and added chrome detailing

The updated K7 will become available in Korea next month, with the US debut likely in 2013.

Monday Maintenance Tip: Go easy when you are struck

Go easy when you’re stuck

When stuck in mud or snow, don’t make the problem worse by damaging an expensive component. Gently rocking in an attempt to free the car is fine. But if it looks as though you’re really stuck, don’t keep at it. Throwing your car from forward to reverse repeatedly, as well as spinning tires at high speeds, can generate lots of heat and spell trouble for transmissions, clutches, and differentials. It may be cheaper in the long run to call the tow truck rather than risk big repair bills down the road. It’s a good idea to carry a traction aid in the trunk, such as sand, gravel, or cat litter.

Kia turns their Optima into a Batmobile!

Batman-kia-optima
If Batman ever decided to step away from his atrocious and beastly black ride and chose to drive a Kia instead, this is probably the car youd sport the vigilante in.

As part of DC Entertainments "We Can Be Heroes" campaign, Kia developed this Batman-inspired Optima SX with artist Jim Lee and Rides magazine lending a hand.

To make its debut in the New Yorks Time Warner Center this week, the car includes a flattering bodykit, 20-inch wheels, a matte and piano black paintjob, a yellow underglow, a Batwing-shaped grille and HID headlights etched with the Bat-Signal.

With lots of black leather packing the interiors, the car also includes a Batsuit and cowl in the trunk, just in case Batman requires a change of clothes.

Monday Maintenance Tip: Be patient during the break-in period

You’ve bought your dream car and now you want to make it last at long as possible in top condition. Here are some things to remember as you pull it out of the dealer’s lot:

  • During the break-in period, typically the first 1,000 miles (1,600 km), keep your speed under 55 mph (88 kpm) or to the speed recommended by your car’s manufacturer.
  • Avoid heavy loads on the drive train, such as towing trailers, and loading the roof rack or trunk with heavy construction materials.
  • Do not allow your new car to idle for long periods — this is good advice for the life of your car, but especially during breakin. The oil pressure generated by doing so may not be sending oil to every part of your engine.
  • Use only light to medium acceleration, keeping the engine rpms below 3,000 for the first few hours of driving.

Kia sports some of the best priced cars on the market!

Kia_10_spectra_coupe
Since the European market shows no sign of recovery and the oil and gas prices continue to increase, small, fuel-efficient cars are more appealing than ever.

The number of cars priced $15,000 and under has increased by 17%, and the percentage is increasing, according to auto analysts. Of course the small price comes with fewer options and lack of luxury, but this is not a time to be picky.

The list of America's 12 Cheapest Cars includes models such as the Kia Spectra at $12,895, which although cheap can easily compete with the higher-end, inexpensive used cars. The cheapest new car available in the US is the Kia Rio, at $10,890, which features a five-speed manual transmission with a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine.

"Generation Y buyers have grown up with technology, conveniences and luxury," says Kim. "They don't want to earn things; they want them now, and they expect them now. Automakers are scrambling to get high-end features into small vehicles."

2014 Kia Soul Electric Vehicle Confirmed

435-2012-kia-soul
Kia has announced that its next-generation Soul will offer the company's first all-electric powertrain.

Slated for 2014 launch, details on Kia's new EV are limited but disguised Soul development prototypes have already been spotted performing shakedown tests near Kia's technical HQ located in Russelsheim, Germany, as well as on the roads of UK. Sources believe the electric Soul will make its public debut either at the Chicago or New York international auto shows.

Beyond the Soul EV, Kia has pushed for fuel efficiency technology in other vehicles in its line-up as well. Two years ago, Kia first introduced its Optima hybrid vehicle, which features a 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine mated with an electric motor producing 40-hp with a unique lithium-polymer battery.

What's more, Kia has also developed an all-new range of diesel powerplants designed to meet Europe's new Euro 6 pollution regulations. According to Kia engineer, the diesel engines will prove expensive to manufacture but still cost significantly less than its hybrid offerings, which is hindered by complex and expensive electrical components. Despite the challenges of creating a price-competitive hybrid, Kia has enjoyed climbing hybrid sales in Europe, rising nearly 80 percent from only 72,000 sold in 2008 to 129,000 units in 2012.

While the European auto market continues to struggle due to economic volatility and steeper austerity measures, Korean automaker Hyundai-Kia believes the company can stand to make serious global sales gains for 2012. Kia has gained an additional 23 percent of the European market in the first 7 months of 2012 despite the Euro market having fallen by 7.1 percent. All in all, according to Hyundai-Kia's figures, the company expects global sales exceeding 7 million for 2012, nearly 1 million more than the 6.1 million sold for 2011.

As Hyundai-Kia's sales performance continues to climb, expect the company to unveil more and more attractive and competitive vehicles to their model range in the months ahead. Look for more information on the latest Kia Soul EV as we draw closer to the 2013 New York Auto Show.

Monday Maintenance Tip: Drive with care everyday

Being car considerate shouldn’t stop after the break-in. Drive with care every day and your car will reward you with longer intervals without repair.

  • Do not race your car’s engine during start-up.This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside.
  • Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive. The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of operation.
  • Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea. The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components.
  • Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights. Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped.
  • Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside. Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs.
  • Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber.
  • When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds. Doing so can damage the power-steering pump.
  • Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.

A Unique New Car That Stands Out From the Crowd

Kia_soul_burner

Several years ago, car shoppers primarily concentrated their purchases on typical sedans, minivans and SUVs, as well as the occasional sports car. But in the last few years, a growing number of buyers are choosing niche cars not easily defined in any one traditional automotive segment. We've listed some of the top unique new cars that fill a special niche on the market for buyers looking to stand out from the crowd.

Kia Soul

Why buy a traditional compact sedan when you can have a Kia Soul? While its tall roof and hatchback bodystyle aren't for all buyers, those who choose a Soul over a more conventional compact will get a practical new car with standout styling. They can also take advantage of terrific fuel economy figures, which run as high as 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg in highway driving. Given its individual appearance--and a base price of less than $15,000, including destination--it's no surprise that more buyers consistently choose the Soul over its ordinary Forte sedan stablemate

Monday Maintenance Tip: Buy gas at reputable service stations

Ask whether the gas you buy is filtered at the pump and if the station has a policy about changing the pump filters regularly. If you get a song and dance, find another gas station. Some stations don’t have pump filters, making you more vulnerable to dirty gasoline. Other stations may not mix alcohol and fuel properly — or worse, water down their product. Find a station you trust and stick to it.
